Characteristics of Children of Alcoholics
  • Guess at what normal is

  • Have trouble following directions

  • Have trouble following a project from beginning to end

  • Lie when it is easier to tell the truth

  • Are extremely hard on themselves, judge others harshly

  • Are extremely serious, often lacking senses of humor

  • Have difficulty making friends and keeping them

  • Have difficulties with change

  • Constantly need approval from others in order to feel good about themselves

  • Need to be and feel accepted

  • Are afraid of abandonment

  • Believe they do not quite fit in

  • Are very rigid or stuck in attitudes or behaviors

  • Are either super responsible or super irresponsible

  • Are extremely loyal, even if the loyalty is undeserved

  • Have a sense of low self-esteem and shame around not being able to do things "right"

  • Have difficulty making decisions. They do not know they have choices.

  • Are perfectionistic

  • Cannot identify feelings easily
